How We Earned DGUV Certification for the TWIG Personal Emergency Signal System
When lone workers face critical risks, only the most rigorously tested safety systems can be trusted. That’s why we invested time and money in a comprehensive technical and regulatory process to achieve DGUV certification for its personal emergency signal systems and platform. This article provides a transparent look at what that journey entailed - and why it matters for safety professionals across industries.
What Is DGUV Certification and Why Is It Important?
DGUV (Deutsche Gesetzliche Unfallversicherung) certification confirms that a personal emergency signal system complies with strict German and European safety standards, particularly under the PNA-11 guideline. Achieving this certification requires verified performance in areas such as:
Fall detection and immobility alarms
Reliable emergency response times
Precise GPS positioning in real-world conditions
For safety officers, this means that the selected TWIG devices and the TWIG Point platform have passed rigorous lab testing designed to reflect the real challenges faced by lone workers across industries like construction, healthcare, utilities, and logistics.
A Demanding Journey of Compliance and Engineering
The certification journey began with early coordination and planning between Twig Com and the DGUV Test organisation’s Electrotechnology Certification Body (Fachbereich ETEM). Over more than two years, the TWIG team worked closely with auditors, engineers, and safety experts to verify and approve hardware and software features tailored for critical environments.
Key Milestone: The Pre-Licence Factory Inspection
On March 7, 2024, a Pre-Licence Factory Inspection was conducted at the TWIG manufacturing site in Salo, Finland. The inspection followed the successful completion of type testing and evaluated whether:
• Production matched the tested and certified type
• Quality systems ensured consistent, type-conform manufacturing
A cross-functional TWIG team - including sales, production, testing, and quality representatives -participated actively. The inspection covered:
• Presentation of the TWIG quality management system
• Review of production and manufacturing documentation
• Verification of testing instructions and test records
• Formal inspection reporting and closing audit meeting
Meeting the Highest Standards
Achieving certification was not just about compliance - it required alignment with the strict technical requirements of the PNA-11 standard. TWIG devices were, for example, tested and approved for:
• Automatic, mandown alarm (e.g., immobility detection)
• Emergency response time thresholds
• Performance under real-world lone worker conditions
The features were developed to meet the demands of critical work environments, with testing focused on performance in high-risk lone worker scenarios.
Inside the DGUV Certification Process
The certification process was governed by a formal agreement with Fachbereich ETEM of the DGUV Test organisation. The scope included:
Certified Product:
Device: Personal emergency signal system (Personen-Notsignalanlage)
Model: TWIG Point
Manufacturer: Twig Com Ltd, Salo, Finland
Certification Standards Applied:
Testing and certification were based on the following foundations:
DIN VDE V 0825-1 – Personal emergency signal systems: Basic requirements
AfPS GS 2019:01 PAK – Testing for harmful polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in materials
DIN VDE V 0825-11 – Supplementary requirements for hazardous environments
A Rigorously Documented Process
We submitted a full and verified documentation package to support the certification process:
System overview (component list and graphical layout)
Operating manuals: TWIG Neo, TWIG One, TWIG One Ex
Datasheets: TWIG Button, TWIG Beacon, TWIG Tag, TWIG Door Switch, TWIG Beacon Ex, TWIG SRD, TWIG Point, and all TWIG chargers
EU Declarations of Conformity
ATEX type examination certificates
Electrical safety reports (IEC/EN 62368-1)
IP protection reports (IEC/EN 60529)
Battery compliance reports (EN/IEC 62133-2)
PAH content verification for plastic enclosures
DGUV Certification Awarded and GS Mark Granted
On February 11, 2025, the selected TWIG devices and the TWIG Point platform were officially certified by DGUV Test under certificate number ET 25006. The certified model was confirmed to meet the requirements defined in § 20 (3) of the German Product Safety Act (ProdSG). As a result, Twig Com Ltd is authorized to apply the GS ("Geprüfte Sicherheit" – Tested Safety) mark to all products that conform to the tested type. This mark confirms compliance with strict safety standards and may be used under the conditions outlined in the certificate. The certification and GS mark approval remain valid until December 31, 2029, unless extended through renewal.
